Boot Camp

I've always been a thrift junkie. Since ukay stores (thrift stores) have sprung about several years back, I've always tried to pry and see what good stuff I could find for much affordable costs. If you think about it, I'm the least to be thought of to scour for dusty, old clothes. My patience has not been built for that kind of scavenging. One try to get a good find is enough to get yourself hooked though.

I have been on the ukay hunt for several years now. The challenge has always been to find something that you like that would actually fit you (finding the right size is a must, of course!) and suit your needs. It's also nice to see blogs such as Ukay Manila and The Ukay Queen showcase great finds at thift stores. Blogs like these fuel my desire to search for more clothes that would complete my malnourished wardrobe.

Lately I've been trying to find jackets and boots for a trip to the east coast by the end of the year. I figured that the best place to find warm clothes for affordable prices would be in thrift stores or ukay- ukays that have been plaguing the metro for some time now.

I found a pair of caramel colored, soft leather boots that would really go well with cold weather and a lot of walking (that's all we do in NY) on my way home from work last Friday. I had no intention of even going on an ukay hunt that time but it was raining and I didn't have an umbrella with me so I had to find some sorta shelter to keep me dry for the meantime. (Yeah, yeah, excuses, excuses!)

The thrift store I sought shelter from the rain was the one that I always frequented for bargains. They were on sale that time because a new set of ukay was to arrive next week. At first I had second thoughts on the boots. The price tag said the pair was at Php 380. I thought it was too expensive (esp. because it was an unscheduled ukay visit and was sure that it was a pair that I would barely get to use anywhere in the islands since it didn't suit the weather much) and was still reluctant on buying second hand shoes. I've never bought ukay shoes before, see.

What the heck? I thought.

I tried a boot on. I was wearing socks so I wasn't scared about getting inflicted with some rare feet disease or something. The boot was a size bigger than my tiny foot. My heart sank. It looked sooo good with my skinny jeans, I bet it would look good with my hoodie that had the same shade as the boot.

I wasn't satisfied with just one shoe so I asked for the pair. As the manong handed me the other boot (I just had to ask again), I asked how much the boots were being sold for. I figured that I better start to open up for haggling. I even asked him if he remembered me from my frequent visits to the store. He said he remembers cause I pass by almost everyday (the store was close by the terminal I take to get home). He looked at the boots and took the price tag off. Then he said: "250 nalang sa'yo."

The other customer who was trying on a pair of kitten- heeled pumps didn't help much because she talked me into buying the pair. She said that the boots suited me fine and that she would buy a pair herself if she weren't too tall.

I was completely sold! It was barely drizzling when I walked out of the store. I still wondered if I could make the boots fit me fine while walking towards the terminal but I figured that a pair of shoe insoles would do the trick. Either way, I am all psyched to use my new pair of boots!

This purchase made me crave for more great ukay finds. I'm actually trying to schedule a trip to the infamous ukay- ukays of Carriedo (or is it Quiapo?) soon. I am sooo up to the challenge of finding another cute pair of boots, plus another jacket or two. :D

My mother has a knack of finding UK stuff. People thought she look like a million bucks with what she wear but they didn't know that she bought it from a thrift store

wow! seriously? coolness. where does she shop? (is your mom in the phils? i forget, i'm sorry). i've got a lot of ukay clothes that i truly boast about as well esp when i get complimented for a particular piece. :)it's not really where it's from, it's more of how you wear it and bring on that swagger that makes you look more expensive than the real value of what you're wearing. ;D
